The online '''Church Directory of Organizations and Leaders (CDOL)''' provides authorized priesthood leaders and clerks with information on Church units and other organizations within the Church, including contact information for their leaders.

== Capabilities ==
CDOL allows leaders to:
* Look up leaders of other units, including contact information
* See the organizational structure of units. For example, a stake would have links to the wards and branches within the stake and any family history centers in the stake, as well as larger entities that include the stake, such as areas, welfare regions, temple districts, etc.
* Access a Unit Locator to find what ward and stake contains a given street address
* Find how to contact any Church department

== Online CDOL (cdol.lds.org) ==
The current version of CDOL was announced in a letter dated 18 December 2008. This new version uses [[LDS Account]] credentials and is located at https://cdol.lds.org. If you do not have an LDS Account, you will need to [[LDS_Account#Create_an_account|create]] one the first time you visit the website. This can be done by clicking the link "Register for an LDS Account."

The new version adds the following features:
* Option to create a customized directory
* Ability to perform searches for organizations or leaders using multiple search criteria
* Option to save searches
* A listing of the current local time for units
* Ability to see all Standard Positions for units in the user's ward and stake

An official proposal has been drafted seeking approval to expand access to ward and branch clerks and executive secretaries. It is expected this change will be approved and implemented soon.

=== Alternative for those without access ===
Some clerks and leaders (such as bishopric counselors, ward clerks, and assistant stake clerks) might need to look up bishops of other wards (e.g., to communicate regarding a member who has moved to a new ward in a different stake, or to move records when a member moves). Although access to CDOL would be helpful, it is not permitted under current policy.

One way to look up a bishop is to use the [[Meetinghouse Locator]]. Entering a member's new address will display the assigned congregation. Clicking on that congregation's link will display a popup over the map that includes the bishop's last name and a phone number.

For moving membership records, it is helpful to have the ward and stake unit numbers and names for the member's new address<ref>{{LDSTech|title=Alternative for getting unit numbers without access to CDOL|post=18744}}</ref>. The popup from maps.lds.org described above will have a link labeled "Go to Website" (assuming the new stake participates in the [[Local Unit Website]] program, which most do). Following that link will take you to the ward's home page. If you look closely at the URL for that page, it will end in "-nnnnnn,00.html"; the "nnnnnn" is the unit number for the ward. Similarly, if you then follow the "Stake Home" link from the ward's home page, you will be taken to the stake's home page, where you can examine the URL to obtain the stake's unit number.

Why was this changed? Did someone simply trust the letter, without actually attempting to verify if the old site was still active? Because it most definitely is still active. I see no reason to put a false statement on the page, which is its current state. I imagine the Church would prefer to have people move to the new site, but if some authorized user doesn't yet have an LDS Account and wants to access the old site, I see no reason why they shouldn't do so.

:The ''old'' information was taken out because the Church wants to direct priesthood leaders to the new CDOL. Although the old CDOL (col.ldschurch.org) is still being updated, the Church is no longer issuing permission keys and are in the process of removing some of the users so they will be directed to the new CDOL (cdol.lds.org). It is in transition. New users should be directed to the new website. The complete discontinuation of the old CDOL is targeted for the end of April 2009.

To wrap up this topic, I have noticed that the old site is not just deprecated -- it no longer functions. So I edited the article to focus on the current functionality and move references to the old site to a new Historical section. My stake president never made any specific provision for adding me (an assistant stake clerk) to CDOL. Yet shortly after I was added to MLS 3.0 as an assistant stake clerk, I both appeared in CDOL, and had access to CDOL. Previously I had no access to CDOL; shortly after the MLS 3.0 change, I had access. That seems like mighty good evidence that at least some assistant stake clerks do indeed have access to CDOL.

== Who can see callings? ==

In the 12:37pm 29 July 2009 revision, [[User:Calebpusey|Calebpusey]] added the line to the features list:
* Ability to see all Standard Positions for units in the user's ward and stake

That doesn't match my experience, so I'm wondering why it was added. When I go into the CDOL, I can't see any Standard Positions for any ward in my stake or for the stake itself, with just a few exceptions: I can see the bishop of each ward, and at the stake level I can see the stake presidency, stake executive secretary, stake patriarch, and stake clerk and assistant clerks. But I can see that same level of information for every stake in the Church. There is no difference between what I can see for my ward or for any other ward in the Church -- just the bishop is listed.

Before the old CDOL site was taken down, I visited it and noticed that it had a lot of people listed in my ward; perhaps everyone with a Standard Position. I did not look at other units in my stake or the Church. But that is rather a moot point, since it doesn't really matter how the old site worked. What we need to document is how the current CDOL site works, and for me it doesn't show the Standard Positions.

However, I know that the CDOL shows people different data, depending on their permission level, which depends in part on their calling. Am I seeing what I see because I am an assistant stake clerk? :Speaking as a stake clerk, when I access CDOL I can now see all stake officers by selecting the ''Show All Positions'' link which is displayed alongside the ''POSITIONS'' heading. Likewise for each unit in the stake, the same link will display all ward officers assigned to standard positions. In each case when the link is selected if first returns a list of collapsed groups with an arrow button pointing to the right. Selecting the button expands the groups and changes the button so that it points down. All too frequently record keepers learn their responsibilities through a haphazard process of on-the-job trial and error. Below are checklists to ensure that members with record-keeping responsibilities are properly oriented, trained (even "certified", if you like), as qualified to perform their callings well.

The clerk wiki is a valuable resource packed with information, but a newly called clerk needs a guide (a simple lesson plan, really) to navigate the content, moving from basic to more complex concepts, in an order that makes sense. The checklists below could follow the order found in the designs of the [http://www.lds.org/pa/display/0,17884,6074-1,00.html record-keeping and auditing training] on lds.org, but this is not a requirement.

Each item in the checklist should be brief. Do not try to explain policies and procedures here. All too frequently record keepers learn their responsibilities through a haphazard process of on-the-job trial and error. Below are checklists to ensure that members with record-keeping responsibilities are properly oriented, trained (even "certified", if you like), as qualified to perform their callings well.

The clerk wiki is a valuable resource packed with information, but a newly called clerk needs a guide (a simple lesson plan, really) to navigate the content, moving from basic to more complex concepts, in an order that makes sense. The checklists below could follow the order found in the designs of the [http://www.lds.org/pa/display/0,17884,6074-1,00.html record-keeping and auditing training] on lds.org, but this is not a requirement.

Each item in the checklist should be brief. Do not try to explain policies and procedures here. Simply link from an item in the checklist to the explanation in an appropriate content source (another wiki page, an online lesson, a notice, or some other document). If the explanation isn't available, start a new page for it. As these checklists grow we can create individual pages for each.

The link for units that have never reconciled directs to an old PDF document that has some out-dated and confusing information. I don't know if this is an integral part of this article, it seems it will cause more confusion then it will anything. It seems to confuse the information found in this article [[Reconciling a ward account that has not been reconciled for more than two months]], I vote for a integration of the two articles into one using the most current information.

With that being said, the "Special Circumstances" portion, I think, needs to be retitled. More often than not, clerks fall into this category where they have been newly called, and the reconcile hasn't been done in several months and they don't know where to start. It also should include information that the first phone call that a new clerk should make is to the stake clerk for assistance and training.

There was a thread on the forum at http://tech.lds.org/forum/showthread.php?t=1149 that discussed whether it made sense to fill in the Tax field for checks written from the Fast Offering category. There is absolutely no documentation that indicates that you would not, but late in the thread there is a post where someone reports that Clerk Support confirmed that the tax amount is 0 for checks written for Fast Offering expenses. There is no reference to whether it is to be paid on Fast Offerings expenses or not. It also states that this is to be recorded only in Utah and North Carolina no other states need to record sales tax. In reading the thread on the forum, I agree with your stance that this should be recorded in the authorized states and in Canada (as GST) no questions asked. I wonder if a better title would be "Sales Tax". The topic covers information that is somewhat independent of MLS. And there is additional information that it would be nice to add to help units in states other than UT/NC to understand how they should treat the issue of sales tax. I don't know those details. I understand that some states have procedures for the Church to claim tax exemption, and that this affects the way purchases are made. : Again, I think that you are right in the need to rename the article. It would one, make it more searchable, and two, allow us to expand it further for states that do not record sales tax. If units outside of Utah and North Carolina are in need of tax exempt information they should contact the [[administration office]] and ask for the Tax Administration Department, they will provide the exempt number for the stake. I removed it because such a membership record can be canceled simply by using the standard '''Cancel Record''' feature (assuming that there are no ordinances, but the premise was that they have not been baptized, so they shouldn't have any ordinances). In fact, the Cancel Record feature presents one of the two reasons as "At least 18 years old and not baptized." Electronic versions are sent to stake presidents via an official e-mail account and are also available in an online repository. CDOL allows leaders to:

* See the organizational structure of units. For example, a stake would have links to the wards and branches within the stake and any family history centers in the stake, as well as larger entities that include the stake, such as areas, welfare regions, temple districts, etc.
* Access a Unit Locator to find what ward and stake contains a given street address

== New CDOL Version (cdol.lds.org)==
A new version of CDOL was announced in a letter dated 18 December 2008. This new version uses [[Login Credentials#LDS Account|LDS Account]] credentials and is located at http://cdol.lds.org. Some clerks and leaders (such as bishopric counselors, ward clerks, and assistant stake clerks) might need to look up bishops of other wards (for example, to communicate regarding a member who has moved to a new ward in a different stake, or to move records when a member moves). Although access to CDOL would be helpful, it is not permitted under current policy.

One way to look up a bishop is to use http://maps.lds.org. Entering a member's new address will display the assigned congregation. Clicking on that congregation's link will display a popup over the map that includes the bishop's last name and a phone number.

For moving membership records, it is helpful to have the ward and stake for the member's new address. The popup from maps.lds.org described above will have a link labeled "Go to Website" (assuming the new stake participates in the [[Local Unit Website]] program, which most do). Following that link will take you to the ward's home page. If you look closely at the URL for that page, it will end in "-nnnnnn,00.html"; the "nnnnnn" is the unit number for the ward. Similarly, if you then follow the "Stake Home" link from the ward's home page, you will be taken to the stake's home page, where you can examine the URL to obtain the stake's unit number.

This needs to be split into Administrative Computers and Family History Computers. While there may be some similarities, (Windows, Symantec, LANDesk) they are supported and controlled by different departments.) Use the wrong Desktop image and you've got problems.

A 3rd category "Other" (Unofficial FHC, etc) would also be a good idea.
