== ListenWIFI ==
With ListenWIFI, audio from the chapel sound system — and other rooms with sound systems — is streamed over the meetinghouse’s wireless network to an app downloaded to church members’ smartphones. They can access multiple audio streams anywhere Wi-Fi is available in the meetinghouse.

[[File:ListenWIFI_Overview_Graphic.png|frameless|620x620px]]

=== Benefits for Church Attendees ===

* Enables attendees to access interpretation or assistive listening on their smartphones with either wired headphones (recommended), neck loops (works with telecoil-enabled hearing aids or cochlear implants), or Bluetooth earbuds or hearing aids.

* Eliminates the need to borrow radio frequency (RF) devices from the meetinghouse library and reduces the stigma of needing to ask for special assistance.
* Since attendees can use their own smartphones instead of loaner devices, there are fewer issues with broken or lost equipment, drained batteries, or cleaning of the devices.
* In some meetinghouses, ListenWIFI enables attendees to move from the chapel to a classroom and find an audio stream.

'''Note:''' For assistive listening and/or interpretation to be available in other areas of the building (such as the Relief Society room, cultural hall, or Primary room), instructors/interpreters must use a microphone plugged into the appropriate input jack in the room. Not all meetinghouses are equipped with these microphone input jacks in rooms besides the chapel.

=== Handouts for Church Attendees ===
These 1-page handouts should be printed and distributed to Church attendees who wish to use the ListenWIFI app.

As of December 8th, 2022 all Church networks will be using a new consolidated Filter Policy that blocks access to websites and inappropriate content such as gambling, file sharing, adult content, gaming, entertainment, and some social media sites. This new consolidated filter policy will allow app store downloads and updates including Church-related apps. This filter policy will also allow access to Youtube.com.

The Managed, Moderate, and Strict Filter Policies will no longer be available in CNM.

If you need to restrict usage of the Liahona WiFi network then please use the [[Lehi and Liahona Wireless Networks|Liahona scheduler]] in [https://CNM.ChurchofJesusChrist.org Church Network Manager (CNM]) to limit access to this WiFi Network. Local unit leaders are able to use the [[Lehi and Liahona Wireless Networks|Lehi SSID]] while Liahona is scheduled to be disabled.
>[[Meetinghouse Technology]] > [[Audio Video Distribution]]

[[File:ASL General Conference.png|480x480px]]

Technology enables us to meet the needs of minority language speakers and the hearing impaired. This article discusses how to use assisted-listening systems (ALSs), show American Sign Language (ASL) in broadcasts, add closed captions to broadcasts and videos, and use interpretation equipment.

== TASK: SETTING UP ASSISTED-LISTENING SYSTEMS ==
[[File:Listening Devices.png|484x484px]]

Church members who use a personal hearing aid often find that it does not adequately receive the sound from the sound system. Others with minor hearing impairments sometimes have difficulty understanding speech in large rooms such as chapels. To help these individuals, many meetinghouses have a wireless ALS.

# Locate the ALSs of each building.
#* Each building is equipped with two ALS devices, and more can be requested from your local facilities management group (FMG) if needed.
# Set the channel on the ALS.
#* Ideally, to eliminate difficulties for stake members, the channel will be the same for all meetinghouses.
#* Church ALSs operate at the 70 MHz band.
# Give the ALS to the person in need.
#* Explain to the user how the device works.
#* Refer to the owner’s manual for specific device operation questions.
# Earphones should be permanently given to repeat users; receivers should not.
#* Those who wish to do so can purchase their own devices.

Notes:

* A special neck loop is also available that retransmits the signal to the user’s hearing aid. In order to use the neck loop, the individual’s hearing aid must have a switch for use with a telephone, and the switch must be in the “T” (telephone) position.
* The earphone jack on the receiver is also the power switch, so the earphone and neck loop should be unplugged when they are not in use. For sanitary reasons, earphones should be given to repeat users to keep. The pocket-size receivers should be checked out from the materials center.
* Many countries restrict the power radiated by Church hearing-impaired system transmitters. The transmitter or antenna should not be modified to increase the coverage.
* Generally, ALSs from different brands are still compatible with one another.

== TASK: SETTING UP AMERICAN SIGN LANGUAGE ==
[[File:ASL Setup.png|none|thumb|479x479px]]

ASL is available for Church broadcasts in North American meetinghouses via the internet. Depending on your satellite connections, it may also be available via satellite. Priesthood leaders should coordinate requests for satellite ASL equipment with their facilities manager.

# Review how to broadcast via internet.
# Go to ChurchofJesusChrist.org/broadcasts and select the desired broadcast.
# From the language drop-down menu in the top right corner, choose '''American Sign Language'''.
#* Remember that picture quality is important for reading hand signals.
#** Use a wired connection to provide a clearer and more reliable picture.
# Decide on the best location to show the ASL broadcast.
#* The broadcast may be shown in a separate room or on a separate monitor within the same room.
#* For TV connection instructions, please review how to connect a TV.

== TASK: SETTING UP CLOSED CAPTIONING ==
[[File:Closed Captioning Screen.png|480x480px]]

Closed captioning for the hearing impaired is available in many areas. If it is available in your area, at least one television should be set up during broadcasts for those who need this service. Sample closed-captioning data is broadcast at least one hour before any major broadcast in order to test the setup.

# Set up the TV monitor in the desired viewing area.
#* For more information on using a TV, click here.
#* For more information on how to connect a TV to a satellite broadcast, click here.
# Go to the TV’s menu screen and select the closed-captions menu.
#* For more details, see the TV’s owner’s manual.
# Select the desired language.
#* CC1—English
#* CC3—Spanish
#* CC4—Portuguese

Notes:

* Closed-caption channels selected on the TV affect only the language of the text, not the spoken language heard through the TV.
* TV HDMI inputs are not compatible with closed captioning. If your chapel has HDMI distribution, locate the composite video output (normally on the front of the modesty rail millwork).

== TASK: SETTING UP INTERPRETATION EQUIPMENT ==
[[File:Interpretation Devices.png]]

Congregations with multiple language needs should coordinate with their local FMG. The FMG will obtain the necessary equipment to provide simultaneous interpretation of meetings. Translation assistance is provided through special receivers and headphones. Interpretation systems are portable and can be used anywhere in the meetinghouse.

# Ensure that the meetinghouse has the necessary equipment to provide interpretation of meetings.
#* Contact your local FMG if equipment is needed.
#* Older equipment has proved very durable and is compatible with newer equipment.
# Lend interpretation devices to all who require them.
#* For sanitary reasons, it is recommended that headphones not be transferred from person to person where possible.
# Ensure that the RF channel is the same on the interpreter’s and listeners’ devices.
#* Ideally, the same channel will be used throughout the stake to minimize difficulties in use.
# The interpreter speaks into the microphone to live-translate the meeting.
#* The microphone should be sensitive enough to accurately broadcast a quiet or whispering voice.
#* The transmitter broadcasts the interpreter’s words to people wearing headphones in the congregation.

''Note:'' To allow part of a congregation to hear a different language without having to be in a different room during satellite broadcasts, use a Williams Sound transmitter. Connect the Williams Sound transmitter line-level RCA jack input to a VCR or TV monitor (tuned to the needed language channel) that is connected to the satellite. FMGs can assist you with these connections.

* It is not normally recommended to display closed captioning on the main screen for all to view. The audio and captions are often out of sync, which can distract and frustrate those who do not need captions.
<br><br>
==ListenWIFI for Assistive Listening and Interpretation==
With ListenWIFI, audio from the chapel sound system — and other rooms with sound systems — is streamed over the meetinghouse’s wireless network to an app downloaded to church members’ smartphones. They can access multiple audio streams anywhere Wi-Fi is available in the meetinghouse.

== TASK: SETTING UP ASSISTED-LISTENING SYSTEMS ==

'''This technology is currently being piloted in 125 meetinghouses in North America.'''

The '''Community Portal''' is the central place to find out what's happening on the [[Main_Page | Tech Wiki]] (see the [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Community_portal Community Portal] on [[Wikipedia:Main_Page|Wikipedia]] for a model). Learn what tasks need to be done, or get or post news about recent events or current activities. If you think something should be done, add it to the lists here, even if you don't have the time or expertise to create the content yourself.

== Tasks ==
The following pages need attention. Let's go through and complete these tasks during the month of April.

===Copyediting===

===Pages needing to be deleted?===
* The following pages need to be evaluated as to whether they still have current information. If the information is outdated, the pages should be deleted:

If the page should be deleted, add the <nowiki>{{delete|reason}}</nowiki> tag to the page, replacing the word "reason" with an explanation of why the page should be deleted. (Only admins can delete pages, but others can indicate that the page should be deleted.)

=== General maintenance ===
As you edit pages, here are some ways to mark pages:

* '''Request''': If you have an idea for a helpful article or wiki feature, but don't have time or ability or inclination to create it, record the idea in [[Project:New wiki content requests|new wiki content requests]].
* '''Wikify''': Follow the [[Project:Guidelines|Guidelines]] to make articles use links, headings, sources, templates, and categories in a standard way.
* '''Annotate''': Use templates to flag articles that need attention if you are unable to make the necessary changes.
** {{tl|Stub}} flags articles or sections that are incomplete and need to be expanded
** {{tl|Draft}} flags articles that are in a Draft stage and not approved as authoritative yet
** {{tl|Edit}} flags articles or sections that need to be rewritten
** {{tl|ToDo}} flags articles or sections that have tasks that need to be accomplished
** {{tl|Need Input}} flags articles or sections that are in need of input
** {{tl|Unresolved}} flags Talk Page discussions that are currently unresolved
** {{tl|Resolved}} flags Talk Page discussions that have been resolved
** {{tl|Under construction}} flags pages (for a brief time) pages that are undergoing major construction
* '''Create''': If there is a topic you think needs to be addressed, create a new article. Also, a red link anywhere on this wiki indicates that someone thought an article ''should'' exist, but they didn't have the time or expertise to write it themselves. If you can, get that topic started by writing the first draft yourself. You can see the entire list of such articles at [[Special:Wantedpages]]; also see [[Project:New wiki content requests|New wiki content requests]] for additional desired articles.
* '''Expand''': Some articles may be incomplete stubs which should be improved by fleshing out the content. You can see the entire list of such articles at [[:Category:Stubs]].
* '''Resource''': Add attachments or links to sample documents, spreadsheets, or templates that will add breadth and depth to the articles.
* '''Copyedit''': Fix grammar, punctuation, style to be more accurate, and in accordance with the [[Project:Manual of Style|Tech Style Guide]].
* '''Source''': Although opinions and personal ideas can be helpful, statements purported to be official Church policy will be more effective if backed up from [[official sources]].
* '''See also''': Adding "See also" sections to the end of articles can improve navigation
* '''Add missing standard pages''': Several pages have standard links in the user interface of the wiki, but have not been written yet. These include:
** '''[[Project:Copyrights]]''': Write/Edit this page, which is linked to from the Editing page that appears whenever you edit a page; this should briefly explain Public Domain, Fair Use, and improper use of copyrighted materials.
** '''[[Help:Editing]]''': Write/Edit this page, which is linked to from the Editing page that appears whenever you edit a page; this should give help with the actual editing process, and link to the [[Project:Guidelines|Guidelines]] page and other helpful existing pages. Currently this simply redirects to [[Help:Contents]].
* '''User page''': Add your own [http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Help:User_page user page] to give people some idea of your background and experience. A user page also gives you a place to create your own sandbox using [http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Help:Subpages subpages].

=== Needs attention or action ===
For a list of pages needing discussion, input, or specific actions, review the following category pages:

:[[:Category:Need Input]]
:[[:Category:Help Needed]]
:[[:Category:ToDo]]
:[[:Category:Unresolved]]

=== Cleanup ===
For a list of pages needing cleanup, review the following category pages:

:[[:Category:Stubs]]
:[[:Category:Pages to be edited]]
:[[:Category:Drafts]]

== Guidelines, help, and resources ==
=== Guidelines ===
* Consult the [[Project:Guidelines|Guidelines]] page so that the content you create can be consistent across the wiki.
* The [[Project:Manual of Style|Manual of Style]] provides guidelines for usage and spelling of Church-specific terms.

==== Selecting Computers for Clerks in Local Units ====
We are often asked about the computers specified for use by clerks in local units. There are five criteria used to choose machines for local units, listed below in no particular order of importance.

===== Utility =====
At a minimum, computers must support the work required of clerks by the General Handbook. With the discontinuation of MLS, all required work is now completed in a web browser. This makes a Chromebook the preferred option. A Chromebook enrolled in Church Management allows the clerk to open a browser as a guest and complete all his work without needing to log into the Chromebook. If a Chromebook is not desired, a Windows computer may be ordered. In this case, the clerk will log into the machine, open a browser, and complete his work. Chromebooks and Windows machines are sized for Bishopric and Clerk related tasks. This may not be adequate for units using the device for other purposes.

===== Availability =====
We work with CDW and Dell to make ordering computers easy. We pick models that are part of the regular inventory to minimize delivery delays. Areas can order from the vendor that works best for them. International areas may order from local vendors. Computers ordered from local vendors must be capable of being enrolled in Church management for Chromebooks or being provisioned for Windows computers.

===== Budget =====
We respect the window’s mite. However, older computers in use can represent security risks for the Church if they fall out of vendor support. We recommend replacement of Windows computers every five years and Chromebooks should be replaced when the OS is no longer being updated (up to eight years).

===== Security =====
Chromebooks offer a significant advantage in security. All history and any saved documents are erased when a guest session ends. Clerks and Bishops can create an account on a Chromebook to save documents. Only the account holder can view these documents, making the Chromebook far more secure than a Windows computer with a shared account.

===== Durability =====

We specify computers that can remain in use for at least five years. Units should leave computers on when circumstances allow to ensure that OS updates are received. Chromebooks will receive OS updates for up to eight years from the date of purchase. Windows updates depend on the age and OS of the computer. We recommend that Windows machines be replaced every five years. Chromebooks should be replaced when they stop receiving updates.

The events you publish appear on both Gospel Stream and [https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/media/broadcasts?lang=eng&cid=rdb_v_broadcasts Broadcasts.ChurchOfJesusChrist.org].

· For private events that you do not wish to appear on Gospel Stream, such as funerals, keep the '''publish toggle off''' and share the '''event code''' with specific individuals.
1. Log in to your Church-provided '''Zoom''' account.

2. Create a '''webinar''' (single or recurring) for your ward or stake meetings.

3.      Log in to [https://meet.churchofjesuschrist.org/ Meet.ChurchofJesusChrist.org].

4. Under '''Events''', click “'''Manage”''' and select your unit. Webinars you create in Zoom automatically appear here.

5. Choose to '''publish or remove''' the webinars for your congregation. The events you publish appear on both Gospel Stream and [https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/media/broadcasts?lang=eng&cid=rdb_v_broadcasts Broadcasts.ChurchOfJesusChrist.org].

· To publish links for single webinars, select “'''Publish'''.”

· To publish links for recurring meetings, select “'''Publish All Occurrences'''.”

· To remove webinars from [https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/learn/gospel-stream-mobile-and-ott-app?lang=eng Gospel Stream] and [https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/media/broadcasts?lang=eng&cid=rdb_v_broadcasts Broadcasts.ChurchofJesusChrist.org], select “'''Unpublish'''”

6. Members can access published webinars by logging in to the [https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/learn/gospel-stream-mobile-and-ott-app?lang=eng Gospel Stream] app or [https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/media/broadcasts?lang=eng&cid=rdb_v_broadcasts Broadcasts.ChurchofJesusChrist.org].

· For private events that you do not wish to appear on Gospel Stream, such as funerals, keep the '''publish toggle off''' and share the '''event code''' with specific individuals. Guests can view the private event by entering the event code at [https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/media/broadcasts?lang=eng&cid=rdb_v_broadcasts Broadcasts.ChurchofJesusChrist.org].
Please consult the General Handbook ([https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/study/manual/general-handbook/29-meetings-in-the-church?lang=eng#title_number57 section 29.7]) as you determine how best to meet the needs of your congregation.

'''People in the following callings can manage events:'''
To ensure that a stake conference goes as planned, you must perform preliminary testing and put viable backups in place. These precautions are especially important when the internet is being used to transmit the meeting to other buildings in the stake. Technology tests for stake conferences can include checking microphones, audio distribution, media playback devices, and broadcast equipment. Backup preparation can include readying extra microphones, AV alternatives, internet hotspots, and audio conferences.

Tests should be carried out a few weeks before the scheduled event to ensure that equipment is working properly and can be replaced prior to stake conference if needed. After multiple tests have been done, a widely used best practice to prepare for stake conference is setting up and using all the technology during the Saturday evening session. Testing everything the night before acts as a dry run and can help identify any problems before the main event.
Please take some time to document your process. This will help you remember your configuration, as it may be six months until your next broadcast event. Having documentation can also help future stake technology specialists be more successful.
To prepare fully, follow the tasks below prior to stake conference:

=== Task 1: Perform Test Events ===
Make sure to test the system before every production event.

* With the help of assistants, set up the actual equipment that will be used at the broadcast site and at each receiving location (computers, displays, audio amplification method, etc.)
* It’s best to have sound and motion in the camera’s view when testing to get the most accurate results of your broadcasting capabilities. To achieve this while testing, you can have someone stand and speak at the pulpit, or you can place a TV monitor at the pulpit with video and audio playing, such as a conference talk, with the camera zoomed in on it.
* Multiple tests will need to be performed to completely understand what settings will work best for your broadcast. This is especially important in areas with low or unstable networks. Test the system by adjusting sound levels and testing during a similar time and day of the week as your future event.
* Connect and test each microphone. Make sure that each device works properly, and that the volume is set at the right level to avoid any distracting feedback. Ensure each microphone has a new or fully charged battery.
* Visit each room that will receive audio or video and ensure the distribution system is functioning properly.
* Set up each TV screen to be used for viewing the virtual meeting. Make sure it turns on and has the necessary cables. Locations can include other rooms (like the cultural hall) and on the stand for speakers.
* Test your internet speed at all locations to understand their internet capacity. Run several tests using different encoder bit rates (e.g., Medium: 750 Kbps, Low: 500 Kbps, Mobile: 250 Kbps) to understand the best bit rate you should use.

Note: Using lower bit rates provides good quality and excellent stability. If reliability and stability are your primary objectives, it is recommended to use the Low (500 Kbps) or Mobile (250 Kbps) video encode rate.

Even if you are successful in using a high bit rate during your testing, you may want to consider lowering the bit rate for extra reliability.

If you encounter issues during a test event that you cannot resolve, contact the Global Service Center.

=== Task 2: Preparing Backups ===
Prepare an alternate technical solution in case there are problems with audio or video during the event. There are numerous points of potential failure in a broadcast. Create a plan of what you will do in case of failure at any of those points. Some recommendations include:

* Verify that you have enough batteries on hand for every device you will use. This includes disposable batteries for wireless microphones and remotes and rechargeable batteries for translation headsets.
* Work with the stake president to know who will be presiding at each receiving location. Have the technology specialists at each location meet with the presiding leaders for these locations.
* Ensure that contact information has been shared in the event of technical failure so that you or other technology specialists can assist in troubleshooting any issues.
* Consider having an audio backup for each building where the broadcast will be received. This audio backup may be as simple as having a phone sitting on the pulpit in each building or as complex as setting up an audio bridge that all participants can call into.
