Guidance and Recommended Tools for Creating a Podcast

Post by hermanocifuentes »

Hello everyone,

I’m looking for guidance on how to create a podcast using the tools and resources available to us.

I’ve searched the Church’s Tech Wiki and this forum but haven’t found a guide that covers the recommended workflow, including the software, hardware, and best practices for recording, editing, and publishing a podcast.

Does the Church have any resources or recommendations for this? If not, would anyone be willing to share the workflow, tools, and equipment they recommend for getting started?

I can certainly start researching options on YouTube and using AI tools, but I wanted to check with the LDS technology community first to see if there are established guidelines, recommended tools, or lessons learned from others who have done this.

Thank you for your help!

Your search for whether the Church has recommended workflows and such would seem to indicate this podcast might be an official Church project. If so, please ask for guidance from your supervisors or explain a little more if you can about the parameters of the project to perhaps enable someone to offer better suggestions.

If this is for a calling you have in a local unit of the Church, I'm curious about what calling would involve creating a podcast.

If this is for a personal podcast to be done entirely on your own without being an official Church project or for a local unit calling, I would think discussion would probably be considered off topic for the forum. However, other moderators might have other opinions.

Thank you for your response and for raising those questions.

I am currently serving as a Stake Technology Specialist in a newly organized stake, and we are planning to start a podcast intended specifically for members of our stake.

This is not a personal project, but it is also not a Church-wide initiative. Our goal is to create content that will benefit and strengthen members within our local stake.

I would appreciate any guidance on the recommended tools, equipment, and workflow for a project of this nature, as well as any considerations or guidelines we should be aware of when creating and publishing this type of content.

Thank you for your help!

This is the first I've heard of a unit wanting to do a podcast. Not necessarily bad, just that you're not likely to find others doing the same.

But as far as equipment, I can't think of anything unique to church podcasts. I'd check with various internet sources that support podcasters. And keep an eye on FB Market place. I scooped up a dbx audio processor at a good price from someone who started but decided podcasting wasn't for them.
Have you searched the Help Center? Try doing a Google search and adding "site:churchofjesuschrist.org/help" to the search criteria.

So we can better help you, please edit your Profile to include your general location.

You might consider working through any issues related to "public affairs" or "communications". For overall guidance from the Church about internet-related resources, one resource to look at might be Use of Online Resources in Church Callings.

And although this seems to be an inward-facing podcast, I expect that non-members would be able to see them too (i.e. it wouldn't be 'paywalled' behind a church login). In the past I know that there have been times where a public affairs specialist (or whatever they're now called) would encounter an existing public resource generated by local leaders/members, and give them counsel about how to structure the content. So that might help with specifics about this particular project that aren't readily answered by the above FAQ.
