I received a “Church Account Verification Code” text message. I had not attempted to login today. I had not yet even set up two step verification. Though I had received a previous text message from this same number in 2014.
I logged into my Church Account, changed my password, and did set up two factor SMS. I then logged in and got a legitimate verification code.
I don’t get what would have caused the verification code to be sent.
For reference here are the three messages I’ve received.
From 2014, not sure why this was a long time ago, which came from +1 (801) 702-8805:
“LDS Account Verification Code: 496947”
From this morning. Unsolicited verification code, which came from +1 (801) 702-8805:
“912955 is your Church Account Verification Code for <my actual username>.”
Legit verification code after setting up two factor, which came from shortcode 74454:
“ 422640 Use this code for Church Account verification.”
Anyone have an idea what’s going on?

I'd think it's likely that someone didn't remember their username exactly. Their attempt managed to hit on yours.
Have you searched the Help Center? Try doing a Google search and adding "site:churchofjesuschrist.org/help" to the search criteria.
