Email Always Junk

Post by jhardman »

Every email that is sent using the "Send a Message" feature in LCR goes to my Junk Mail. Along with that of many people in my Ward. I finally reached out to my provider (Fastmail) to see why. I always mark them as "Not Junk" and I added the from address as a contact in my account. Still junk. This was their reply. I'm pretty savvy with this stuff, but obviously I can't fix it for them. Is it worth trying to get the Church to fix this or just forget it?

Thank you for getting in touch with us about this issue. I'm happy to offer clarification about why this email was filtered to Spam.

I checked your Spam folder for example message from this sender and found one with the subject "Multi Stake Youth Dance". This email has unfortunately failed the sender authentication check. You can see an example of corresponding headers below:

Code: Select all

Authentication-Results: phl-mx-01.messagingengine.com;
    dkim=fail (body has been altered, 1024-bit rsa key sha256)

This email failed the DKIM check because the message body has been altered. This sometimes happens if the message has been forwarded before it reached you and the headers were changed.

The email server of churchofjesuschrist.org employs a strict DMARC policy that essentially says any email that fails either checks need to be rejected (bounced). However, we evaluated the situation, overrode the policy and quarantined the email to Spam instead.

I can see that you have added their email address to your Contacts and we recognized that properly (X-Spam-known-sender: no ("Email failed DMARC policy for domain"); in-addressbook). However, having a sender address in the Contacts doesn't override the DMARC policy of the sending domain. Imagine if a scammer sends you a spoofed message pretending to be churchofjesuschrist.org which failed all the authentication checks- you would want to the fake email to end up in Spam instead of your Inbox.

Only the sender themself can resolve this problem by working with their mailer, as they should be having deliverability issues with other recipients as well. Please reach out to them and let them know their email are going to Spam. You can refer to my message for the technical details.

I hope this is helpful! If you have any further questions or concerns, please let me know.

You say your provider is Fastmail, but the email domain on your account seems different. Your email is used as a "reply to", so its domain may be involved the parsing of the header.

You might want to check if someone else can send you an email though Send A Message and see if you have the same result.

Edit: looking at it further, your email as shown in the forum software seems to be incorrect. It's missing the final letter, making it a ".co" instead of ".com".
Have you searched the Help Center? Try doing a Google search and adding "site:churchofjesuschrist.org/help" to the search criteria.

So we can better help you, please edit your Profile to include your general location.

My email is correct. I own a custom domain that I use with Fastmail as my mail provider. My end is setup according their best practices and I only have problems with Junk with the Church Send a Message.

I agree there is and has been an issue with email authentication failing for DMARC on emails being sent out via LCR for most of the year, starting in Feburary when DMARC started being enforced on most providers including Microsoft and Yahoo. I've had to resort to a free gmail account just to get these emails. It is strange cause not everyone is hit the same. All I know is I have no option but to change email addresses, which for a paid account is a little frustrating. With DMARC it can fail from SPF, DKIM, and domain alignment within the email. In otherwords if they use a different domain then what they sent it as it will also fail. These standards are to make it harder on SPAM/Phishing, but have forced email marketing platforms to updgrade to these standards as well. LCR messaging is basically a ICANSPAM ACT compliant email marketing platform for the church, so if they do not fix it, it will become non-compliant and eventuatually few will receive emails from the platform.
