Curriculum for multilingual ward

Post by antoneroundy »

Every year, the Church sends us manuals for the next year in English. We have a large and growing number of Spanish speakers in our ward (and in fact, we are the host ward for a Spanish group in our stake.) Is there a way to have our ward designated as multilingual English/Spanish so that we get curriculum in both languages automatically rather than having to wait till it's available to order in Spanish and then pay for it ourselves?

In past years, we've gotten too many English manuals since the number sent appears to have been based on ward population and/or attendance numbers, but didn't take the language mix into account. This year, we didn't get quite enough in English...so I guess at least the issue of getting too many in English has been solved!

I may have just found a partial answer to my own question. While on the CDOL website, I noticed that our ward is listed as being 100% English speaking, and it even shows a "materials language." So clearly, there's a way to record multiple languages and a percentage for a unit. Now I just have to figure out how that gets edited. I'll open a support ticket, and presumably we'll get this done.

Contact your stake clerk. The stake can make changes to the languages used in a unit along with the percentage of the population of the unit that speak what language.

As an aside, if you require additional Spanish-language CFM manuals, this might be something the stake should provide instead of the ward. Many times even if a ward is the host ward for a language group, the group exists as a stake-wide entity and pulls in members (officially and unofficially) from various parts of the stake. Other times, the language group only contains members from a single ward, even if it's technically stake-wide.

Different stakes will have different ideas about how they manage budgets for a stake-wide language group, beyond the usual metrics based on membership records. But something to consider, and the stake may pitch in a portion or all of the required funds for language-specific aspects.
