Church's plans for updating hymns in piano music players?

Post by BrianEdwards »

Is anyone aware of any (formal or tentative) plans the Church has for updating their piano music players with the new church hymns? I thought this might have been discussed in a separate post, but can't find anything, so creating a new post here.

I'm no expert in any of this, and it seems like there are various music player implementations (hardware and software) in different locations, which likely make upgrades tricky. But in our surrounding stakes, we're already running into issues where units that rely on the music player capabilities (no qualified pianists), cannot sing any of the new hymns during sacrament meetings. This includes smaller language groups that have a piano with the music player in the room where they meet, and don't want to require an English-only pianist sitting in their meetings, or shuttling in-and-out just for the music. Definitely a small percentage of congregations, but for those relatively few congregations, it's impactful.

I understand the Church might be waiting to get closer to the new hymnal release date, before sharing any of these update timelines. But I was hoping that maybe somebody in the Forum had heard something about the Church's plans, and could at least provide an unofficial overview of the potential upgrade plan. With all the effort the Church has put into this new unified hymnal, I expect/hope that there's also an active plan to update the myriad of music players in church buildings.

I'm going to hazard a guess that they won't come up with updated files until all the hymns are added. That way it's just one update cycle.

By piano music players, do you mean the hymns that are built into the organs? I'm not sure if there are plans to update organs with the new songs, but the current recommended solution in the General Handbook if you don't have a pianist or organist is to use another instrument (with approval from the bishop), or use recordings from Gospel Library or the Church website. See 19.3.6. Musical Instruments.

Some newer organs will play MIDI files. We have a ward that recruited a capable organist from anther ward to record many of the new hymns in MIDI format. The ward uses those files to have the organ play them for meetings.
